Building the Creative Ecosystem

Building the Ecosystem for Creativity in Muncie

How do communities become known as destinations for the arts?

You might look at our murals, local performances, community festivals, or our beautiful architecture and think, “Well, that’s how!” Close, but not quite.

Those beautiful examples are actually just the signs of a thriving arts community. What really makes these things possible - and makes them thrive in the future - is a long-term commitment to supporting the arts within our community.

Muncie and Delaware County will become known as a creative hub because people, organizations, institutions, businesses, artists, and community leaders decide to make long-term commitments to building something larger than any one project.

That is exactly how The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County approaches community investment.

When the Foundation received a $2.25 million Community Support Grant through Lilly Endowment Inc.'s GIFT IX initiative, the opportunity was never viewed as funding a collection of unrelated projects. Instead, it became another opportunity to strengthen the network of people and organizations already working together to make Delaware County a more vibrant place to live.

Strong communities function as ecosystems.

Each organization brings unique strengths. Arts organizations create programming and opportunities for creative expression. Downtown partners activate public spaces and support local businesses. Educational institutions prepare future artists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. Nonprofits address community needs while creating opportunities for residents to connect with one another.

None of these efforts happen in isolation.

The Community Foundation has spent years helping build relationships across these sectors, recognizing that lasting community change occurs when organizations work together rather than compete for attention and resources.

People gather outside the Carnegie Branch of the Muncie Public Library during Carnegie Lights, a light show displayed on the historic downtown building in December 2025.

That philosophy has become especially important through the Creative Space Action Plan and the broader vision for Muncie's Creative Corridor.

Rather than focusing on one destination or one institution, the Creative Corridor seeks to strengthen the entire cultural landscape. Historic buildings are being reimagined. Arts organizations are expanding their reach. Downtown partnerships are creating more opportunities for residents and visitors to experience the city in new ways. Each investment builds upon the next, creating momentum that extends well beyond the individual project.

The Foundation's recent Community Support Grant awards reflect that philosophy.

Support for Cornerstone Center for the Arts will help assess the needs of one of downtown's most recognizable historic buildings. Continued investment in Muncie Downtown Development Partnership strengthens the organization responsible for connecting businesses, events, and community life in the city's core. Assistance for Muncie Civic Theatre supports the transformation of another historic downtown property into expanded arts and cultural space. Multi-year support for MuncieArts helps the organization continue its evolution as a service-oriented partner for artists and the broader community.

While each investment serves a different purpose, together they tell a much larger story.

They strengthen leadership.

They preserve important places.

They expand opportunities for artists.

They create gathering spaces.

They improve organizational capacity.

And perhaps most importantly, they reinforce the relationships that make collaboration possible.

The Foundation's approach recognizes that creativity is not confined to stages, galleries, or classrooms. It also lives in strong nonprofit organizations, healthy partnerships, welcoming public spaces, and communities willing to invest in one another over time.

This philosophy also reflects the Foundation's broader approach to community leadership.

Every grant builds upon previous work, including initiatives supported through GIFT VII, GIFT VIII, Together DM, READI, READI 2.0, and numerous local partnerships. Rather than beginning from scratch with each new funding opportunity, the Foundation intentionally builds upon the momentum already created throughout Delaware County.

That continuity matters. It’s what makes Muncie grow.

Meaningful community transformation rarely happens in a single grant cycle. It requires patience, trust, and sustained investment over many years. It also requires listening—continuing conversations with nonprofit partners, donors, civic leaders, businesses, and residents to ensure that future investments reflect the community's evolving priorities.

Ultimately, the Community Support Grant is about much more than distributing funding.

It is about investing in the conditions that allow creativity, collaboration, and community life to flourish.

Healthy ecosystems don't happen by accident. They are cultivated through thoughtful partnerships, shared vision, and organizations willing to invest not only in today's projects, but in tomorrow's possibilities.

That is the work happening across Delaware County today. With every collaborative investment, the community moves one step closer to realizing a future where creativity is not simply something people experience—it is part of how the community grows together.
