The Lathrop P. Johnson Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Lathrop Johnson. Dr. Johnson was Professor of German Emeritus in the Department of Modern Languages and Classics at Ball State University. Dr. Johnson's life work was helping young people understand more about themselves and others around the world through the study of language. He was passionate about, and expert in, his teaching, specializing in Phonetics, Culture, beginning language courses, Drama, and Poetry. He impacted the lives of thousands of students directly and more indirectly throughout Indiana through teachers who studied with him. He was a pioneer in the use of technology as a tool to complement the teaching of language face-to-face. Before computers were widespread in use, starting back in 1982, he taught himself and faculty in his department and in the university to use computers, and was a national leader in developing instructional programs in German. This scholarship creates a legacy for Dr. Johnson by continuing his support of a student's learning in language and fulfilling their educational dreams.
