In 2015, the Courtyard Muncie Marriott opened its doors as the country’s first teaching hotel. A hands-on learning lab and classroom technology were made available through a $53,837 grant from The Community Foundation in 2014.

A project of the Arc of Indiana, the Erskine Green Training Institute, located inside the Courtyard Muncie Marriott, provides a post-secondary education opportunity in hospitality for people with disabilities. Participants live, take classes and work in the hotel during a four to eight week program. Upon completion of the program, they receive a Certificate of Best Practices that can be used to secure employment in hospitality roles.

The first training classes graduated in 2016. During the course of the year, 39 individuals had completed the program with a 60 percent placement rate. At the end of 2016, enrollment for 2017 was exceeding the program’s first year. Additionally, the program is getting the attention of employers who are changing their hiring policies to recognize the Erskine Green Training Institute certificate as a qualification for hire.

We look forward to seeing the impact of the Erskine Green Training Institute to our community and to people with disabilities.
