Addison When he was a student, Gary Addison had received scholarship awards that gave him the means to attend college. Now, he’s paying it forward to future generations. “I thought, ‘Somebody helped me in college; maybe I can start a scholarship.’ Every little bit helps,” says Gary. After 36 years of teaching in the Muncie School systems, Gary was concerned by teacher shortages, and he wanted to make a lasting change. In his mission to encourage future teachers, he established the Gary W. Addison Scholarship in 2010 to financially assist a Delaware County high school graduate planning to major in K-12 education. Miller “Cowan is a very small school with a very high-quality education. The school gave me a good education and a good foundation from the beginning, without which I wouldn’t have proceeded to the doctoral level,” says Dr. Albert Miller on his motivations for charitable giving. A Cowan High School graduate, Albert is passionate about education and understands that it’s “very critical to get children on the right track at an early age.” Now, Albert is doing what he can to make sure that other students have the same opportunities he did. In 2012, he established the Dr. Albert O. Miller Scholarship to support a graduating Cowan senior with at least a 3.2 GPA. It was important to Albert that he establish the fund during his lifetime so that he could see the impacts of his philanthropy firsthand. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62de55ef5ddce257eb10b822/fb99b1ba-1234-45fe-be35-9239a0110b3d/Ross+Family+%281%29.jpg News - June Focus: Celebrating Scholarship Honorees Ross Family Carol Ross had recognized many of the obstacles that came with raising two autistic children, but one she wasn’t prepared for was the lack of scholarships available to her sons. “When my older son was looking to go to college, there weren’t any scholarships specifically for kids on the spectrum,” said Carol. “He was lucky enough to get academic scholarships, but... there was just nothing there for him.” Carol believes this indicates a larger pattern in which students with disabilities are often discouraged from pursuing higher education. Carol, who worked in education, says this system is far outdated. “These kids are more than able and capable of going to either junior colleges or community schools. Yet their charitable works on solid ground were also a soaring example of community care and philanthropy. The couple were long-time churchgoers, and both were Elders at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, where Jane was also the financial secretary for 15 years. Both Charles and Jane were involved with organizations throughout the community, with Charles helping to found the local Junto Club and Jane giving tours at Minnetrista for years. Born in Wisconsin in 1921, she earned her nursing degree and promptly enlisted in the Army Air Force upon graduation. She was stationed in Texas as a nurse during World War II and earned the rank of First Lieutenant during her time there. Pat also earned the admiration of Franklyn Brinkman, a fellow World War II veteran. After the war, Pat worked as a Registered Nurse at Ball Memorial Hospital until her retirement. Pat and Franklyn were married for 65 years until Franklyn’s death in 2010. A life-long learner and nursing advocate, Pat established the Patricia K. and Franklyn D. Brinkman, Sr. Nursing Scholarship to benefit Ball State nursing students. The couple’s children and grandchildren were an important part of their lives, and their family is still involved in the grant process each year. The residents of Delaware County are fine citizens, and we wanted to give back to them.” WH “Dub” Fike and his wife Nancy have given back to the community in many ways, and their legacy of philanthropic giving stretches far throughout the community. In his youth, Dub felt that Muncie was a “perfect climate” in which to begin his early career and raise a family. Though they moved elsewhere later in life, Dub and Nancy cherished their former home and wanted to continue their legacy indefinitely. Dub and Nancy established multiple funds at the Foundation, including the Dub and Nancy Fike Fund/Ball Memorial Hospital Foundation, which supports the IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Founded in 1929, the hospital now cares for nearly 70,000 people a year. As the first woman in Indiana to become President and CEO of a mental health center, she herself was a catalyst for change. During her 23 years with Meridian Health Services, she had a passion for mental and behavioral health care, and she was a strong proponent for child advocacy, including in foster care placement. Philanthropy had always been important to the Gresham family. Suzanne served as a chair and board member for the Foundation, and Julian served his community through social work and outpatient mental health programs. “Our careers have always been in the service arena,” said Suzanne. “We’re very cognizant of the need for funds and resources to deal with particular issues. In 1985, Ed Ball supported the idea of a community foundation to support the city he loved, and he began the campaign with a $1 million matching challenge. Just two years into The Community Foundation’s development, Roni Johnson joined the team – by 1992, she was the first full-time Executive Director, a position she held for 21 years. A Muncie native, her parents were teachers and community leaders who inspired leadership in young Carol. “My dad was the one that dropped me off at ballet lessons and Girl Scouts, but my mom was the Girl Scout leader and member of the Girl Scout Council Board,” says Carol. Don dedicated his life to philanthropic giving. A child of the Great Depression era, he understood the impact that finances – or a lack thereof – can have on a community. As a young man, Don regularly tithed to his church, a practice that followed him throughout his life and led to the creation of the R. Donald and Susan A. Bell Memorial Fund. Established in 1993 by Don and his wife Susan, the designated fund benefits St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, which they cared about deeply. Born with a heart condition, Michael faced chronic health challenges during his life. Unfortunately, chronic health conditions shadowed her teenage years, and in 2013, Ashley passed away from an undetected heart condition called myocarditis. In his 34 years of teaching physical education, health, and speech, Tom also coached 58 varsity sports teams – a feat that got him declared “the winningest coach in Delaware County” by one local radio station. His wife Lesley recalls that “Student after student said ‘Mr. Devine would always listen to me. He never criticized. Hurley was passionate about improving racial equity, and he believed strongly in the power of education. “Education is the key to having a good life. Keesling E.K. Keesling was a pillar in the education of historic Delaware County students. During Center School’s sixty-odd years of existence, E.K. Keesling served as a teacher and principal for more than 30 years. A farmer by trade, Mr. Keesling was passionate about education and well-liked by his students, and he continued to serve as a member of the Liberty-Perry school board after his retirement. Robert served the community through the Yorktown Lion’s Club and as a member of the Yorktown Planning Committee, while Wanda volunteered with Yorktown Methodist Church and assisted with school events. When it came time to honor their legacy, a scholarship fund was the perfect way to uphold their love of the city. Contributing to the Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation or beginning a named unrestricted fund builds on a decades-long legacy of community care and generosity. Unrestricted giving is essential to supporting Delaware County’s changing needs, and these gifts will go on to support our community in perpetuity, whatever comes our way. Mia Johnson has been on the Foundation Board since 2021, and she and her husband Wayne are committed to supporting Delaware County. Both Johnsons are passionate about higher education and hold executive administrative positions within Ivy Tech Community Colleges. The couple is active in countless nonprofits and community initiatives throughout the region. When a matching campaign became available, the Johnsons seized the opportunity to begin the unrestricted Wayne and Mia Johnson Fund to continue their good work. “Our story began in Muncie, and we have decided to raise our family in this community,” says Mia. “Starting an unrestricted fund with the Community Foundation has always been a goal for us... Unlike a donor advised fund, the donor does not consult on specific grant decisions – instead, the team at the Foundation ensures that grants match the spirit of their overall field of interest. Nancy Smith finds that her field of interest fund is the perfect way of ensuring that her philanthropy benefits the causes she cares about while still allowing flexibility within those causes. The Nancy J. Smith Fund benefits animal welfare and elderly care in Delaware County, two of her passions. “Muncie is a great place, but Muncie is a community with a lot of needs... I think the Foundation has their finger on the pulse of where those needs are and can identify them better than any individual person can,” says Nancy. By pursuing advised giving through the Foundation, donors can support personalized causes while still benefiting from a professional endowment structure and advising. Jack and Jane Buckles were one couple who took advantage of donor advised giving through their 1999 Buckles Family Fund. The Buckles were Indiana natives committed to making a mark on their homeland, and philanthropy was an important part of their work. “I know that I’m supporting a number of worthwhile community needs, and I’m helping to plug the gap for those who are not as fortunate. It’s what we’re supposed to do, what we’ve been taught to do—to reach out to those who for one reason or another need some help,” said the couple. Following their passing, their fund continues to carry out their commitment to community through the involvement of their loved ones. At the time that designated funds are established, donors select the charity that they want to support, and grants from the fund are used solely for the needs of that charity, in perpetuity. One local organization that has benefitted from a designated fund is the Delaware County’s Court-Appointed Special Advocate program, or CASA. Nationwide, CASA uses trained volunteers to advocate for children in the court system, many of whom have experienced abuse or neglect. Carol Trimmer, a longtime volunteer and Advisory Board member of Delaware County CASA, knew that a designated fund was "the right vehicle for ensuring that CASA will continue to thrive.” “The program sometimes needed funds above and beyond those appropriated by county government,” Carol explained. “What if we had a safe and secure fund that could be tapped when the need was really great?” In 2013, Carol and her husband Joe established the CASA of Delaware County Fund. These planned gifts may be of any size, and there are many forms that estate gifts may take – will bequests, gifts of life insurance, and IRA beneficiary designations are just a few. By letting the Foundation know of these gifts during your lifetime, your generosity is honored as a living legacy. Linda and Connie Gregory are two members of the Legacy Society. “Neither of us have children, so we wanted our estates to benefit the community,” say the sisters. Born and raised in Muncie, Connie says they “had great opportunities growing up” and feel it’s important for them to “pave a way for people who don’t have the advantages.” Connie spent much of her career serving low-income community members before she retired to serve local non-profits. Linda served on the board of The Community Foundation and other local boards over the years, including the Muncie City Council. While many people are happy to be quietly recognized for their good deeds, every once in a while, someone chooses an extraordinary path: complete anonymity. Through private fund planning, the Foundation supports anonymity in giving, whatever the type. In 2017, Shafer Leadership Academy was shocked to find that a donor had gifted $10,000 to establish a designated fund for their benefit – and they had done so completely anonymously. Shafer Leadership Academy has been a pillar in Delaware County, providing community members with the coursework and program experience to grow their leadership skills. Every year, up to 3,000 people receive free or low-cost training through the Academy’s programming. Today, it is the largest collegiate orchid collection in the United States. One of the collection’s early curators, Russ Vernon, has always been “obsessed” with orchids, says his wife, Anita. Pat K. Moore (right) dedicated her life to serving Muncie’s children. A Delaware County native, she graduated from Ball State and taught in Anderson and Muncie before joining the church’s Pre-K Program.
