2011 Second Quarter Competitive Grants
Eleven grants totaling $147,592 have been awarded to local nonprofit agencies and groups in the Foundation’s second competitive grant cycle of 2011.
The grants are awarded in five areas of interest: arts and culture, human services, economic development, education, and community betterment.
Second quarter grant recipients include:
- American Diabetes Association received $2,790 (from the Charles & Claudia Sursa Fund) to provide “camperships” for three Delaware County children to attend Camp John Warvel, a unique summer camp experience for children living with Diabetes.
- Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) received $15,000 to defray the cost of a van to transport animals to the vet and pick up strays in danger.
- Big Brothers/Big Sisters received $7,176 (from the Bassett Family Fund) to recruit, screen, train, and support six volunteers in one-to-one mentoring relationships.
- Energize-ECI received $25,000 to establish an EB 5 Visa Regional Center, an independent organization designed to provide a fast-track for foreign investors desiring U.S. citizenship and encourage regional economic development.
- Gateway Health Clinic received $25,046 to allow increased clinic operating hours, thereby increasing the number of patients able to be treated and reducing the number of patients on the waiting list to receive services.
- Hearts and Hands United received $5,000 (from the Gordon & Pam Cox Fund) to provide backpacks and school supplies to be distributed in the annual Tools for School giveaway this fall.
- Indiana Black Expo – Muncie Chapter received $4,080 (from the MutualBank Charitable Foundation Fund) to defray the cost of the 16th annual Health, Employment and Community Information Fair, held in conjunction with the 2011 Muncie Black Expo.
- Masterworks Chorale received $4,000 (from the Mary Jane Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of a professional orchestra and an American Sign Language interpreter for the 2011 Christmas Concert.
- Muncie Symphony Orchestra received $5,000 (from the Louisa & Waldo Beebe Named Fund) to support the 2011 Festival on the Green, an afternoon-evening event celebrating Muncie arts and culture.
- Red-tail Conservancy received $1,000 (from the Stefan & Joan Anderson Fund) to defray the cost of the 2011 Living Lightly Fair and an outreach program to raise awareness about practices which protect and conserve water resources.
- United Way of Delaware County received $40,000 to provide support for the Technology Wrap-Around Project, a pilot project in the Gaston and Whitely communities. The program helps create access to computers and the internet and ensures that individuals and families using these services are provided opportunities to improve their lives in the areas on education, income and health.
The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. is a publicly supported philanthropic institution governed by a volunteer board of local citizens. The Foundation manages contributions donated by individuals, businesses and corporations as a permanent community endowment. Distributions from these funds are given back to the community in the form of grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies. To date, over $32 million has been awarded to enrich the lives of the residents of Muncie and Delaware County.
