Tanya Reed's successful efforts to
restructure Bridges Community Services, Inc., have earned her the 2010 David
Sursa Leadership Award. The citation, which includes a $1,000 grant to the nominating
organization, was presented at the Foundation's 25th anniversary
celebration in May.
"Eight years ago, when Tanya joined the board at Bridges Community Services, the agency was struggling to survive," explained Foundation President Roni Johnson, who announced this year's recipient. "Within a year she had accepted the role of chair, and along with her colleagues had begun the hard work of redefining and strengthening the agency. Today Bridges is a highly respected member of the nonprofit community that has regained its status as a HUD housing provider, expanded its staff from two to 14, increased its capacity to shelter families, and secured $1.3 million in federal funding on behalf of at-risk Hoosiers."
The Sursa Award is presented annually and memorializes David Sursa, the Foundation's first president. It was established five years ago as a way to recognize and encourage extraordinary leadership by a nonprofit board member. Past recipients have included Marjorie Zeigler, Mary Dollison, Bob Walsh and Donn Roberts.
