2010 2nd Quarter Competitive Grants Awarded

The Community Foundation has announced that 15 grants totaling $158,400 have been awarded to local nonprofit agencies and groups in the Foundation's second competitive grant cycle of 2010.

The grants are awarded in five areas of interest:  arts and culture, human services, economic development, education, and community betterment.

Second quarter grant recipients include:

  • Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) received $1,400 (from the Mary Kate Pingry Fund) to defray the cost of replacing the floor in ARF's main doghouse area.
  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters received $10,000 (from the Gordon and Pam Cox Fund) to defray the cost of recruiting, screening, training, and supporting twenty volunteers in one-to-one mentoring relationships.
  • Bridges Community Services, Inc. received $15,000 to defray the cost of furnishing 19 transitional housing units.
  • Ball State University Downtown Dinner Theatre received $2,000 (from the Jane Harrell Buckles Fund) to defray the cost of Downtown Dinner Theatre's 2010 and 2011 seasons.
  • Cardinal Greenway received $15,000 to defray the cost of resealing older asphalt trail on the Cardinal Greenway.
  • Energize-ECI received $25,000 to defray the cost of the organization's regional economic development initiatives.
  • First Choice for Women, Inc. received $10,000 to defray the cost of a program to educate teenagers on sexual health and empower them to make healthy decisions by choosing to remain abstinent until marriage.
  • Gateway Health Clinic, Inc. received $2,000 (from the Charles and Claudia Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of an electrocardiogram machine, electrodes, and a microscope.
  • Hearts and Hands United received $3,000 (from the Robert P. Bell Education Fund) to defray the cost of backpacks and calculators for the 2010 Back to School Tools for School supply giveaway.
  • Masterworks Chorale received $1,200 (from the Stefan and Joan Anderson Fund) to defray the cost of new computers and software.
  • Muncie Symphony Orchestra received $5,000 (from the Mary Jane Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of the 2010 Concert on the Green.
  • Red-tail Conservancy received $3,300 (from the Martin and Helen Schwartz Fund) to defray the cost of the 2010 Living Lightly Fair.
  • Robert P. Bell Education Committee received $13,500 to provide small grants (of up to $350) to teachers in Delaware County with innovative classroom projects.
  • United Way of Delaware County received $50,000 to provide matching funds for leadership giving in the 2010 United Way Campaign.
  • Yorktown-Mt. Pleasant Township Community Library received $2,000 (from the Charles and Claudia Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of a new seating area and activities in the children's area of the library.

The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc., celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is a publicly supported philanthropic institution governed by a volunteer board of local citizens.  The Foundation manages contributions donated by individuals, businesses and corporations as a permanent community endowment.  Distributions from these funds are given back to the community in the form of grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies.  To date, over $31 million has been awarded to enrich the lives of the residents of Muncie and Delaware County.

The next application deadline is July 9, 2010.
