2008 4th Quarter Competitive Grants

The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. has announced that 11 grants totaling $80,839 have been awarded to local nonprofit agencies and groups in the Foundation's fourth and final competitive grant cycle of 2008.

The grants are awarded in five areas of interest:  arts and culture, human services, economic development, education, and community betterment.

Fourth quarter grant recipients include:

  • A Better Way Services, Inc. received $5,000 (from the Jeanne and John Smith Fund) to defray the cost of producing a brief video to increase the public's understanding of domestic violence and the role A Better Way plays in the safety and emotional healing of women and children victims.
  • Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) received $1,717 (from the Charles and Claudia Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of two new computers and accessories to track animal data and maintain a communications database.
  • Ball State University Center for Peace and Conflict Studies received $3,000 (from the Martin and Helen Schwartz Fund) to defray the cost of a project that employs artistic activities to promote the message of nonviolence and encourages acceptance and understanding.  This project is a collaborative effort between Ball State, Beyond I CAN, VSA Arts of Indiana, and Hillcroft Services.
  • Ball State University School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science received $500 (from the Morris Youth Fund) to defray the cost of a program that brings local Head Start students to campus to participate in physical education activities.
  • Energize-ECI received $25,000 to defray the cost of the organization's economic development initiatives in Delaware County and the East Central Indiana region.
  • Masterworks Chorale received $4,432 (from the Louisa and Waldo Beebe Fund) to defray the cost of the 2008 Christmas Concert.
  • Motivate our Minds, Inc. received $20,000 (from the Morris Youth Fund) to defray the cost of providing educational programming to children in Delaware County and to provide scholarships for program participants.
  • Muncie Area Reading Council received $2,000 (from the Joseph and Janet Wilson Fund) to defray the cost of providing a book to each of the babies born in Delaware County next year as well as information about the importance of reading to children.
  • Muncie Community Schools received $5,790 to defray the cost of sound equipment rental and sheet music purchase for the 2008 Community Christmas Sing.
  • Ronald McDonald House of Indiana, Inc. received $5,000 (from the Stefan and Joan Anderson Fund) to defray the cost of lodging assistance for families from Delaware County staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
  • Smart Living Project, Inc. received $2,500 (from the Jane Harrell Buckles Fund) to defray the cost of a collaborative program with the Muncie Young Professionals Group to promote sustainable living in the community by encouraging the use of reusable shopping bags.

The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc., established in 1985, is a publicly supported philanthropic institution governed by a volunteer board of local citizens.  The Foundation manages contributions donated by individuals, businesses and corporations as a permanent community endowment.  Distributions from these funds are given back to the community in the form of grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies.  To date, over $28 million has been awarded to improve the lives of the residents of Muncie and Delaware County.

The next application deadline is January 9, 2009.
