The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. has announced that 16 grants totaling $82,240 have been awarded to local nonprofit agencies and groups in the Foundation's second competitive grant cycle of 2008.
The grants are awarded in five areas of interest: arts and culture, human services, economic development, education, and community betterment.
Second quarter grant recipients include:
- Back to School Teachers' Store received $15,000 (from the Morris Youth Fund) to provide transitional funding to defray the cost of moving to a new facility.
- Big Brothers/Big Sisters received $1,890 (from the Joseph and Janet Wilson Fund) to defray the cost of expanding the school-based mentoring program by providing activities during the summer months.
- Ball State University, Downtown Dinner Theatre received $2,500 to defray the cost of production of the popular hit musical Nunsense at Cornerstone Center for the Arts as a community outreach event.
- East Central Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry received $10,000 to defray the cost of processing, packaging, and freezing donated meat to provide protein-rich donations to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana.
- Gallery 308 received $3,000 (from the Mary Kate Pingry Fund) to defray the cost of Arts Kaleidoscope: Arts, Poems & Video, an event inspired by the former Humpback Barn Festival of Poetry and Art.
- Guardian Scholars received $6,000 to defray the cost of providing post-secondary education resource kits to all Delaware County guidance counselors. The JUMP to College resource kits will contain pertinent information about support services and resources for youth in the foster care system making the transition to and attending college.
- Minnetrista received $3,800 (partial funding from the Stefan and Joan Anderson Fund) to defray the cost of the 2008 Living Lightly Fair, a event designed to inspire, educate, and enable residents of East Central Indiana to adopt sustainable living practices.
- Muncie Civic Theatre received $2,700 (from the Louisa and Waldo Beebe Named Fund) to defray the cost of new computers to stabilize box office services and enhance communications with volunteers and patrons.
- Muncie Optimist Club received $1,000 (from the Morris Youth Fund) to defray the cost of the Safe Assured ID Kit, a product designed to help law enforcement and community members to respond quickly to a child abduction.
- Muncie Symphony Orchestra received $5,000 to defray the cost of the 2008 Symphony on the Green Music and Arts Festival.
- Planned Parenthood of Indiana received $1,450 to defray the cost of 25 free cancer screenings for low-income women in Delaware County.
- Ross Community Center received $2,500 (from the Jane Harrell Buckles Fund) to defray the cost of uniforms and supplies for a community-wide summer baseball program.
- Wildlife Resqu Haus received $5,400 to defray the cost of safety upgrades on animal enclosures to protect rehabilitating birds from predators and new cages for raptors being transported to a new home.
- Project Senior Sunshine received $3,500 to defray the cost of a series of bus tours and special events for residents of area nursing homes.
- Robert P. Bell Education Committee received $13,500 to provide small grants (of up to $350) to teachers in Delaware County with innovative classroom projects.
- City of Muncie received $5,000 to defray the cost of the 2008 Fourth of July fireworks celebration.
The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc., established in 1985, is a publicly supported philanthropic institution governed by a volunteer board of local citizens. The Foundation manages contributions donated by individuals, businesses and corporations as a permanent community endowment. Distributions from these funds are given back to the community in the form of grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies. To date, over $28 million has been awarded to improve the lives of the residents of Muncie and Delaware County.
