The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. has announced that 17 grants totaling $182,030 have been awarded to local nonprofit agencies and groups in the Foundation's second competitive grant cycle of 2007.
The grants are awarded in five areas of interest: arts and culture, human services, economic development, education, and community betterment.
Second quarter competitive grant recipients include:
- Young Musician's Club received $2,400 (from the Joseph & Janet Wilson Fund) to defray the cost of a summer music mentoring program for at-risk teenage musicians.
- East Central Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry received $5,000 (from the Gordon & Pam Cox Fund) to defray the cost of processing donated venison and beef to be provided to Second Harvest Food Bank.
- Family Services of Delaware County received $5,380 (from the Hamer & Phyllis Shafer Fund) to defray the cost of Dad's Night Out, a program that offers fathers and other role models the opportunity to increase interaction and improve communication with their middle school children.
- Heartland Stage Company received $1,250 (from the Endowment for the Arts Fund) to defray the cost of producing "Wandering...from Kentucky," an original play presented free to the public at Minnetrista.
- Hillcroft Services, Inc. received $7,300 (from the Mutual Federal Foundation Fund) to defray the cost of purchasing equipment and furniture needed to make Camp Isanogel ready for campers for the 2007 season.
- Indiana Council for Economic Education received $3,000 (from the Jane Harrell Buckles Fund) to defray the cost of ten Delaware County teachers attending a graduate credit workshop instructing them how to integrate the study of economics into the classroom.
- Motivate our Minds, Inc. received $15,000 (from the Morris Youth Fund) to defray the cost of providing educational services to underserved youth in Delaware County.
- Muncie-Delaware County Senior Citizens Center received $1,200 (from the Day Star Fund) to defray the cost of chairs and a chair caddy for use at the Center's social functions.
- Muncie Endurathon received $2,500 (from the Charles & Claudia Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of adding a sprint distance to the 2007 race.
- Muncie Mission received $25,000 (partial funding from the Ball Corporation Community Betterment Fund) to provide funding toward a capital campaign to build a new homeless rescue shelter for men.
- Muncie Symphony Orchestra received $5,000 (from the John & Janice Fisher Fund) to defray the cost of the 2007 Symphony on the Green and Festival of the Arts.
- Muncie-Delaware Clean and Beautiful received $3,300 (from the Ball Corporation Community Betterment Fund) to defray the cost of beautification efforts in the traffic median at North Wheeling Avenue and the North Rosewood split.
- Ross Community Center received $2,500 (from the Morris Youth Fund) to defray the cost of a free summer baseball program for children ages 3-16.
- Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana received $25,000 (partial funding from the Edmund F & Virginia B. Ball Fund) to provide funds for the organization's capital campaign to build a new facility.
- Sports and Hobby Development Group received $2,000 (from the Morris Youth Fund) to defray the cost of events surrounding the BPS Boys Baseball World Series in Muncie on July 25-29, 2007.
- United Way of Delaware County, Inc. received $75,000 to provide matching funds for the Leadership Giving Program during the 2007 United Way Campaign.
- WBST-Indiana Public Radio received $1,200 (from the Stefan & Joan Anderson Fund) to defray the cost of Bookspeak, a radio program in which readers can talk about their favorite books with a radio book review.
The Board also approved the following proactive grants.
- Robert P. Bell Education Committee received $13,500 to fund mini-grants to teachers with innovative ideas in Delaware County classrooms for the 2007-2008 academic year.
- Project Senior Sunshine received $3,500 (from the Edmund F. & Virginia B. Ball Fund) to fund a summer program allowing senior citizens from area nursing facilities to observe our community and socialize through a series of bus tours.
The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc., established in 1985, is a publicly supported philanthropic institution governed by a volunteer board of local citizens. The Foundation manages contributions donated by individuals, businesses and corporations as a permanent community endowment. Distributions from these funds are given back to the community in the form of grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies. To date, over $25 million has been awarded to improve the lives of the residents of Muncie and Delaware County.
