The grants are awarded in five areas of interest: arts and culture, human services, economic development, education, and community betterment.
Fourth quarter grant recipients include:
- Big Brothers/Big Sisters received $4,235 (from Morris Youth Fund) to provide matching funds toward the expansion of the school-based mentoring programs and the one-on-one mentoring relationships.
- Boys and Girls Club of Muncie received $10,000 (from the Morris Youth Fund) to defray the cost of providing programming in the coming year.
- Debonairs Club, Inc. received $10,000 to defray the cost of the 2007 Muncie Homecoming Festival promoting education, community and family in Delaware County.
- Delaware County Special Olympics received $7,500 (from the Gordon & Pam Cox Fund) to defray the cost of expanding the local Special Olympics program to allow more individuals the opportunity to participate.
- Family Services of Delaware County, Inc. received $2,500 to provide support for the Homeward Bound Walk, a collaborative effort of 12 local agencies to increase awareness and raise funds for homelessness efforts in our community.
- A Better Way, Inc. received $7,500 to defray the cost of security system upgrades and safe storage units for residents' personal belongings.
- Girl Scouts of Wapahani Council, Inc. received $2,500 (from the Stefan & Joan Anderson Fund) to defray the cost of merging five central Indiana Girl Scout Councils into one high performance organization. Grant funds will provide new council ID patches for every Delaware County Girl Scout.
- Monroe Township Abandoned Cemetery Restoration received $5,000 (from the Mary Kate Pingry Fund) to defray the cost of restoration efforts in three abandoned cemeteries in Monroe Township.
- Muncie Community Schools received $5,300 (from the Mary Jane Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of sound equipment rental and sheet music purchase for the 2006 Community Christmas Sing.
- Open Door Community Services received $25,000 to defray the cost of administering the Women, Infant, and Children's Nutrition Program (WIC) in Delaware County.
- VSA Arts of Indiana received $1,000 (from the Charles & Claudia Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of program materials and supplies for the 2007 session of the Caring Arts Summer Day Camp.
- Wayside Mission received $7,500 (from the Hamer & Phyllis Shafer Fund) to defray the cost of structural improvements and supplies for the organization's homeless shelter facility.
- WBST-Indiana Public Radio received $3,785 (from the Martin & Helen Schwartz Fund) to defray the cost of the Word Nerds program, a radio show presenting the study of language in a new and entertaining way.
The Board also approved the following proactive grant.
- Second Harvest Food Bank received $15,000 (partial funding from the Bassett Family Fund) to defray the cost of delivering thousands of boxed meals to Delaware County residents through area tailgating events.
The upcoming grant deadlines are January 12, 2007 and April 13, 2007. Applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. on the day of the deadline in order to be considered.
