The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. has announced that 11 grants totaling $152,800 have been awarded to local nonprofit agencies and groups in the Foundation’s third competitive grant cycle of 2006.
The grants are awarded in five areas of interest: arts and culture, human services, economic development, education, and community betterment.
Third quarter grant recipients include:
- Cancer Services of Delaware County received $3,100 (from the Gordon & Pam Cox Fund) to defray the cost of a consultant to assist in the development of a five year strategic plan.
- College Mentors for Kids! Inc. received $4,500 to defray the cost of expansion of a program to match Ball State University student mentors with local elementary school students.
- Cornerstone Center for the Arts received $16,000 (from the Morris Youth Fund) to defray the cost of scholarships and supplies for the Cornerstone Arts Adventure Program.
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Team received $10,000 (from the Morris Youth Fund) to defray the cost of vinyl wrap and installation on a 55 foot “Freedom Bus,” a mobile history museum exhibiting a historical timeline of the quest for freedom.
- Meridian Services Corporation received $50,000 to provide partial start-up funding for the Delaware County Child Advocacy Center.
- Muncie Civic Theatre Association received $20,000 (from the Ed & Virginia Ball Fund) to defray the cost technical improvements, including an overhaul of both the sound and lighting systems.
- Muncie Symphony Orchestra received $13,000 (from the Bassett Family Fund) to defray the cost of a collaborative program with Muncie Children’s Museum to bring age appropriate live music and activities to children during the Museum’s Free Family Saturdays.
- Selma Lions Club received $6,000 (from the Mutual Federal Foundation Fund) to defray the cost of a new heating and cooling system to enable expanded use of the organization’s facility.
- TEAMwork for Quality Living received $18,700 (from the Ed & Virginia Ball Fund) to defray the cost of the pilot phase of the OPT Dinners and OPT Circles Program to bring people out of the isolation of poverty and help them connect with the community.
The Board also approved the following proactive grant.
- Bells are Ringing received $1,000 (from the Day Star Fund) to offer local senior citizens the opportunity to make free long distance phone calls during a week in December. Call sites will be located throughout Delaware County.
In addition, The Foundation Board approved a $10,500 grant for scholarships to be awarded by The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. The Foundation will award a $500 scholarship to each of the nominees not selected to receive the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.
The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc., established in 1985, is a publicly supported philanthropic institution governed by a volunteer board of local citizens. The Foundation manages contributions donated by individuals, businesses and corporations as a permanent community endowment. Distributions from these funds are given back to the community in the form of grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies. To date, over $20 million has been awarded to improve the lives of the residents of Muncie and Delaware County.
The next application deadline is October 13, 2006. Applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. on the day of the deadline in order to be considered.
